MSP, MSSP and the Evolution of the IT and Cybersecurity Market

18/07/2024
More than standalone service offerings, the market tends to move towards an integration of MSP and MSSP services, promoting a more comprehensive view of IT management and Cybersecurity.
André Oliveira PONTUAL

A quick Google search for the terms MSP and MSSP leads us to a wide range of results around the term “differences”. However, if originally these acronyms referred to distinct services, the truth is that, driven by the major changes of recent years, the market tends to evolve towards an integration of the two services.

But let’s start with the basics. At their core, MSP and MSSP are indeed distinct services. The offering of an MSP (Managed Services Provider) focuses on a set of outsourced global IT services ranging from network and infrastructure management to cloud environment backups, technical support, among others. In the case of an MSP, Cybersecurity services may exist, but in a more limited form, usually confined to services like firewall configuration and antivirus and antimalware software.

An MSSP (Managed Security Services Provider), on the other hand, specializes in IT security and, as such, keeps up with the constant evolution of the sector, focusing on monitoring and managing all security in a preventive and reactive manner, with advanced endpoint protection solutions and threat detection and incident response. However, essential IT management and consulting services are not part of the core of an MSSP.

A Paradigm Shift

In recent years, the IT world has undergone various changes, impacting service offerings and their approach to the market. The demand for comprehensive IT solutions has led many MSPs to start incorporating security services into their offerings. Conversely, MSSPs have expanded their offerings to include IT services. This has led to the emergence of hybrid service providers, with more complete ranges of IT and security for companies and organizations.

The increase – in number and sophistication – of cyberattacks is also a major factor. Currently, companies feel a lot of pressure to keep their IT and security systems updated and functional, as threats are constant and cybercrime can have a very detrimental impact on businesses (many even end up closing down). Thus, more and more MSPs have sought to update their skills in the field of Cybersecurity, offering a more complete range of IT services.

Another factor driving the convergence of MSP and MSSP is the shift to cloud-based solutions. The simplicity of use and the ability to adapt and scale are among the advantages of the cloud that have most captivated companies; as such, the trend of migration to the cloud is expected to continue in the coming years, and both MSPs and MSSPs should increasingly converge in these services.

Benefits of the Convergence between MSP and MSSP for Companies

The convergence of MSP and MSSP service offerings has several advantages for clients. Firstly, because it simplifies the search for an IT partner – after all, it’s much simpler to look for a provider that brings together all the services. On the other hand, having to manage the relationship with more than one IT provider is more expensive and time-consuming. Centralizing all services with one partner also allows for a more integrated and optimized approach, providing the desired levels of protection and functionality.

This convergence between MSP and MSSP is thus a response to the needs of companies and organizations, which, in a context of complex digital transformation and acceleration, increasingly require technological partners with constantly updated solutions, experience, and know-how. Partners who act as expert IT consultants, equipped with tools that allow them to anticipate, protect, manage, and react at any moment, saving time, money, and concerns for company managers.
